Outsourcing Intrusion Detection System for Health Organization

Information technology outsourcing has over the last several decades experienced substantial growth to become a basic strategy employed by many organizations across the world, with academics and industry suggesting that this growth is bound to be prolonged and maintained in the near future (Abu-Musa, 2011).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Outsourcing Intrusion Detection System for Health Organization specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These authors further posit that IT related activities, which were once executed almost exclusively in-house by most organizations, are now regularly outsourced or off-shored to dedicated vendors. But as observed by Goodman Ramer (2007), outsourcing or offshoring of IT services inflates the potential for organizations to be exposed to a number of system vulnerabilities, mainly due to the intimate connections with network systems. This paper purposes to not only describe how Northern Arizona Healthcare hospital chain has outsourced an intrusion detection system (IDS) to prevent such system vulnerabilities on critical patient health information, but also to outline some potential advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing this component. According to Schoberle (2007) personal health information (PHI) privacy and security concerns should be central to any health organization as the health data is perceived as one of the most private facets of life for many people. To secure such data, therefore, effective IDS can prove to be an invaluable tool because it would have the capacity to perform early detection of malicious activity and probably thwart more serious attacks to the protected site (Barnes, n.d.). In this regard, the Northern Arizona Healthcare hospital chain has outsourced IDS from Perot Systems to assist in the process of analyzing logs to determine system vulnerabilities, auditing and prevent intrusion (Brenner, 2005; Bezroukov, 2011).Advertising Lo oking for essay on it? The IDS in Northern Arizona Healthcare is basically composed of three components, which include sensors, analyzers, and the user interface (Brenner, 2005). While the sensors are charged with the responsibility of gathering data or evidence of an intrusion, the analyzers are responsible for receiving input from the sensors and determining if an intrusion has really occurred. Indeed, it is the analyzers that provide direction on what actions the Managed Security Service Provider (Perot Systems) should take as a consequence of the intrusion. Lastly, the user interface to IDS allows the analysts to observe output from the network system or manage the behavior noted in the system (Brenner, 2005; Ya-Yueh, 2011). Although the IDS does not prevent malicious actions or network threats, it has been instrumental in assisting the health organization get early warning signs of a malicious attack or misuse, thus enabling the Managed Security Service Provider to not only alter installations defensive posture to enhance resistance to attack, but also confirm secure configurations and operation of other security features such as firewalls (Ya-Yueh, 2011). Consequently, intrusions and attacks on the organization’s patient health information database have been reduced. Available literature demonstrates that there exist many advantages and several disadvantages of outsourcing IDS to enhance security for sensitive patient information. One of the main advantages of outsourcing IDS to a Managed Security Service Provider, According to Fitzparick (2008), †Å"†¦is that security should be the MSSP’s key business function; thus, they should focus their resources on the current security technologies, strategies, education and personnel while monitoring the internet for the latest vulnerabilities and threats† (p. 14-15).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Outsourcing Intrusion Detection System for Health Organization specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Outsourcing not only ensures that the health organization is able to create competitiveness through focusing on core activities and engaging in cost and efficiency savings, but it increases productivity, enhances operational control, and facilitates staffing flexibility (Abu-Musa, 2011 ). As already mentioned, outsourcing information security has its own downsides. Fitzparick (2008) argues that as the responsibility for intrusion detection shifts to the third party service provider, â€Å"†¦the client l oses experience, knowledge, and skills that are gained by investigating security events; technical skills are dulled as the internal team relies on the knowledge of the MSSP analyst† (p. 17). Second, the service provider may not have the capacity to understand their client’s security requirements, thereby occasioning a situation that will see the client receive very generic service from the provider. Outsourcing also increases the potential for possible attacks and other system vulnerabilities by elongating â€Å"communication channels and increasing the number of organizations and computer networks that touch the data† (Goodman Ramer, 2007, p. 812). Lastly, it is expensive to outsource IDS. To conclude, it is indeed true that ensuring the security and safety of patient health information should be a foremost responsibility for any health organization (Schoberle, 2007). This paper has discussed how such information could be secured through outsourcing intrusion detection and prevention components, and the pros and cons associated with such outsourcing. The onus, therefore, should be for individual health organizations to decide how best they could protect sensitive patient health information – and outsourcing IDS represent one of the many possibilities. Sniper Attacks essays

Sniper Attacks essays Since the beginning of October until the end of October a sniper has been going wild in the Washington area killing innocent and unsuspecting people. This man or now as we know, men, were very smart or perhaps clever is a better word. They did a very good job on not getting caught until the end when they became careless. Sadly enough it has caused many families lots of grief including the snipers families. The sniper of the Washington area committed criminal acts since the beginning of October, and now it is over, thankfully before anymore people were killed. On October 4, 2002 in Silver Springs, Maryland, the law enforcement agents went on the search for a sniper who the police believe to have randomly chose 5 people to kill. Each person killed with a single shot. The victims were a taxi driver at a gas station, a landscaper mowing the lawn, a woman at a post office, another woman who was vacuuming out her vehicle, and the last was in a parking lot. On Friday, Police Chief, Charles Moose said, Theres still no information to lead us to think our victims are associated, they dont appear to be anyones enemies, just random targets. About 7:45 on Thursday morning James L. Buchanan, 39, of Arlington Virginia, was the first one of the victims. He was cutting grass at a car dealership in the White Flint area. The next victim was 8:15 a.m. on the same morning. About a half-hour later Sarah Ramos was killed. The killings brought the number of homicide to 25 this year, in the Montgomery County. The last time as many people were killed in one day in the county was in July 1995, when a handymans assistant killed podiatrist David Marc Goff, his three daughters and a contractor at Goffs home in Potomac. On October 6, 2002 a 43 year old woman was shot in the back in Michaels craft store parking lot. No arrest had been made in the shootings that began Wednesd ...

Is Shingles Contagious 2 Methods of Transmission to Avoid

Is Shingles Contagious 2 Methods of Transmission to Avoid SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Exactly how you get shingles can be confusing: it's technically the reactivation of chickenpox and is caused by the same pesky virus (the varicella-zoster virus). But is shingles contagious? What are the riskiest transmission methods? How long is it contagious? What can you do to avoid getting shingles transmitted to you? What even causes shingles? We'll be covering everything below, but let's start with a basic question. Feature image: Wikimedia/Fisle How Do You Get Shingles? You don't catch shingles from other people- instead it's caused by the reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. You can only develop shingles if you had chickenpox when you were younger. You can't get shingles if you've never had chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus can enter your nervous system and lie dormant there for years. Someday, it might reactivate and cause shingles to appear. Doctors aren’t exactly sure why this happens, but it tends to happen to older people (over 50 years old) and/or those with weakened immune systems (for example, those with HIV or leukemia). You can't catch shingles from someone else, but if you have it, you can transmit the virus to others, giving them chickenpox. Is Shingles Contagious? Technically, you cannot catch "shingles," like I explained above- it's just a reactivation of the virus. However, you can pass the virus around! According to Mayo Clinic, if you have shingles, you can pass the varicella-zoster virus (in the form of chickenpox) to anyone who isn't immune to chickenpox. This means that shingles can only be spread to someone who has never had chickenpox before or has never gotten the chickenpox vaccine. If they’re infected, they’ll develop chickenpox (not shingles). So is shingles contagious? Absolutely yes- someone with shingles can pass the chickenpox virus to other people. How Is Shingles Transmitted? The virus can only be transmitted in two ways. The first method is through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash (such as the sores in the image above). The second method is through contact with the fluid from the shingles sores. Avoid contact with anything that might have touched the fluid from the shingles sores. For example, make sure you don’t share any towels or clothes with someone who has shingles. All that being said, according to the CDC, shingles is less contagious than the chickenpox, meaning it’s more difficult to spread. How Long Is Shingles Contagious? According to the CDC, someone with shingles can spread the virus when the rash is in the blister period. This shingles contagious period is when the blisters start appearing and filling with fluid; it can last anywhere from 1-4 weeks. Shingles is not infectious before the blisters appear. Shingles is not contagious once the shingles rash has developed crust or has started to scab over. Precautions to Take Around People With Shingles If you’ve had chickenpox or shingles before (which over 95% of the US population has) or you’ve received the chickenpox vaccine, you don’t have to worry about getting infected yourself since you’re immune to the virus. However, you don’t want to unintentionally spread the virus to those who’ve never had chickenpox. If you’re in contact with someone with shingles, you should avoid directly touching their rash. You should also avoid touching their clothes, bedding, towels, or anything else that might have touched their rash. If you must touch these items, you should wash your hands thoroughly immediately after contact. Even if you've already had chickenpox, if you get the fluid from the sores on your hands, you could potentially spread the virus on accident. You could touch a doorknob and leave some of the virus behind. Wash your hands often to avoid this. If you haven't had chickenpox before and haven't been vaccinated, you should avoid direct contact with shingles sores and should also avoid contact with anything the sores might have touched (clothes, bedding, towels, etc.). Also, you should go get the chickenpox vaccine; anyone 12 months or older is eligible to receive the vaccine. Precautions to Take If You Have Shingles If you have shingles currently and are trying to avoid spreading it, the best thing you can do is cover your rash. According to the NY Department of Health, the risk of spreading the virus is low if the rash is covered. If you have shingles, you should keep your rash covered, not touch or scratch the rash, and wash your hands often to prevent the spread of the virus. Also, according to the CDC, until your rash has developed crusts, you should avoid contact with the following groups: Pregnant women who have never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine Infants who have not yet had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine People with weakened immune systems such as people receiving immunosuppressive medications or undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and people with HIV These people are the most at risk for catching chickenpox. No touching with shingles! Conclusion: Is Shingles Contagious? In short, yes. Here are the key points to remember about shingles transmission: Shingles is the reactivation of chickenpox; you can only get shingles if you’ve previously had chickenpox. Shingles can only be spread to those who’ve never had chickenpox before (and who haven’t had the chickenpox vaccine). Shingles can be transmitted through contact with open sores or fluid from the sores. Before the sores appear and once they scab over, the virus is not contagious. The period during which shingles is contagious is between 1 and 4 weeks. If you’ve had chickenpox before (or have had the vaccine) and are around someone with shingles, you don’t need to worry because you’re immune to the virus; however, wash your hands to avoid spreading it to others. If you’ve never had chickenpox and have not had the vaccine, then you should avoid contact with the sores and with anything the sores have touched (i.e. bedding). You should also consider getting the chickenpox vaccine. If you have shingles and are trying to avoid spreading it, cover your rash, wash your hands often, and avoid direct contact with infants, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

To what extent can one seperate the personal from the social in Essay

To what extent can one seperate the personal from the social in discussing the 'anger' of Jimmy Porter in the play Look Back in Anger - Essay Example Therefore, the anger of Jimmy in the play is both personal and social and the reader can very well experience the mental struggles and hardships that Jimmy undergoes in his day to day life. In fact, Jimmy raises his voice against all sorts of established and conventional social, gender, class and sexual relations; however, he does not point out any solutions and goes on complaining about each and everything he comes across. As Saugata Mukherjee points out, â€Å"The young, educated English youth, portrayed in Look Back in Anger, is a confused soul and the post-war changeover in the character of international politics raises doubts to which he finds no answers† (Mukherjee, 2006, p. 130) Jimmy feels that he is living in a dreary world where â€Å"there aren’t any good, brave causes left† (Osborne, p. 89). He tries to escape himself in to the animal world and the Bear and Squirrel game in the play is such an attempt of escape from the real world. However, the couples understand the inability of the ‘furry animals’ to bring about any positive changes and Alison rightly confesses that the Bear and Squirrel game is nothing but â€Å"a silly symphony for people who couldn’t bear the pain of human beings any longer† (Osborne, p. 46). However Jimmy does not want to live a life of inaction. He is fed up with the routine life that he leads. Sundays are so depressing for Jimmy as he can no longer cope up with the same ritual of â€Å"reading the paper, drinking tea, ironing† (Osborne, p. 8). Thus, for him life is a replica of the same routine and this adds to his dissatisfaction with the new age. He despises the life of inaction that Cliff and Alison lead and cries out: â€Å"Nobody thinks, nobody cares. No beliefs, no convictions and no enthusiasm† (Osborne, p. 10). He refers to the Edwardian world of Colonel Redfern as a symbol of the bygone era and the colonel’s world provides him inspiration to aspire for changes. Similarly, he retreats to Jazz

The Conversation and the 1970s America Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Conversation and the 1970s America - Essay Example In this movie, Harry Caul has the ability of recording any private conversation between two or more people, and anywhere they are. However, one of surveillance work resulted into the murder of three individuals. This creates a sense of guilt and regret over the work he did. This guilt is also brought about by his strict religious believes in Catholicism (Welsh, Gene and Rodney, 33). On this note, the consequences of his surveillance work that led to the murder of these three individuals greatly affected another contract he got from Martin Stett. This is because of the perceptions that Caul had, in regard to his work, and the use of the information from him. To him, the intention of Martin Stett was to kill the two couples, that is Ann and Mark. On this basis, Caul refused to hand over the buggled information to Martin Stett. However, the perceptions of Caul were wrong, since the intention of Martin Stett was to use the information for purposes of protecting his boss, the Director. A role played by Robert Duvall. His lack of judgment led to the murder of Robert Duvall. This scene directly relates to the political events of the 1974. During this period, the political environment was filled with information emanating from the Watergate scandal. During this scandal, President Nixon was found with tapes that had recordings of private conversation of various people. The FBI were able to prove that the president had a complex recording system that was able to effectively record any conversation involving two. or more individuals, anywhere they are. It is this type of technology that Harry Caul used in recording and blogging into the private conversations of individuals. In fact, the producer of the movie denotes that the film used the same types of surveillance technology and wiretapping equipment’s that the Nixon administration used during the scandal. However, Coppola is quick to point that this is coincidental since the script of the movie was written in the 1960s, before the disclosure of the Watergate scandal. The blogging took place at the political offices of the democrats situated at their Watergate

eBay’s Globalization Strategy Essays -- Business Management Studies

eBay’s Globalization Strategy eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar and Jeff Skoll in May 1996. Their headquarters were in San Jose, California in the midst of the dot-com era. The company idea initially began as â€Å"Auction Web, which Omidyar launched in September 1995. The idea was to develop an open market place that was available for all members of the community to discuss, compare, and trade computer items as well as collectibles. The idea took off, reaching thousands of registered users in just a few years. By January 1997, AuctionWeb could not handle the large load of page views – bandwidth. Omidyar solved this problem by writing the code for a new system: ebay (Echo Bay Technologies). In September 1997, AuctionWeb was shut down and the eBay platform was opened. The ebay company vision: â€Å"To create the world’s largest global trading community and to help people trade practically anything on earth.† eBay had 2.4 M visitors in 8/98, quadrupling in size to 8.4 M visitors in 4/01. Listings on their site began at 500 in 1998 and grew to just under 5 M in 2001. What started out as an auction site for computer and collectible items matured to include toys, pottery, automobiles, furniture, to movies, etc. Omidyar and Skoll achieved their, â€Å"trade anything† goal much sooner than expected. In 1998, eBay went public. Given the sufficient number of funds received from the IPO, eBay launched strategic initiatives aimed at six specific objectives. 1) Grow the eBay community and strengthen the brand (attract and maintain vitality) 2) Broaden the company’s trading platform by growing existing product categories, promoting new product categories, and offering services for specific regions 3) Fost... ...ever, the 2004 estimates are more closely aligned with 2003 Actuals. Life and Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley

ercy Bysshe Shelley ( /? p? rsi ? b li/;[2] 4 August 1792 – 8 July 1822) was one of the major English Romantic poets and is critically regarded as among the finest lyric poets in the English language. Shelley was famous for his association with John Keats and Lord Byron. The novelist Mary Shelley was his second wife. He is most famous for such classic anthology verse works as Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind, To a Skylark, Music, When Soft Voices Die, The Cloud and The Masque of Anarchy, which are among the most popular and critically acclaimed poems in the English language. His major works, however, are long visionary poems which included Queen Mab (later reworked as The Daemon of the World), Alastor, The Revolt of Islam, Adonais and the unfinished work The Triumph of Life. The Cenci (1819) and Prometheus Unbound (1820) were dramatic plays in five and four acts respectively. Although he has typically been figured as a â€Å"reluctant dramatist†, he was passionate about the theatre, and his plays continue to be performed today. He wrote the Gothic novels Zastrozzi (1810) and St. Irvyne (1811) and the short prose works â€Å"The Assassins† (1814), â€Å"The Coliseum† (1817) and â€Å"Una Favola† (1819). In 2008, he was credited as the co-author of the novel Frankenstein (1818) in a new edition by the Bodleian Library in Oxford and Random House in the U. S. entitled The Original Frankenstein, edited by Charles E. Robinson. [3][4][5] Shelley's unconventional life and uncompromising idealism[6][7], combined with his strong disapproving voice, made him an authoritative and much-denigrated figure during his life and afterward. Mark Twain took particular aim at Shelley in In Defense of Harriet Shelley, where he lambasted Shelley for abandoning his pregnant wife and child to run off with the 16-year-old Mary Godwin. [8] Shelley never lived to see the extent of his success and influence; although some of his works were published, they were often suppressed upon publication. He became an idol of the next three or four generations of poets, including important Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite poets. He was admired by Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell, William Butler Yeats, Upton Sinclair and Isadora Duncan. [9] Henry David Thoreau's civil disobedience and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's passive resistance were apparently influenced and inspired by Shelley's non-violence in protest and political action, although Gandhi does not include him in his list of mentors.
